The WORLD's FAVOURITE Street Foods!

I recently heard of an experience right here in Jamaica, in the hills of Upper St Andrew that happens at the end of every month, called "Street Food Saturdays". Which is basically a "cook out" style experience for real "foodies" like myself. Which is basically a "cook out" style experience for real "foodies", like myself. Or "Nyammies" which I believe is the most apt expression, of this level of food appreciation or love, for those who also "Love 2 Nyam"as I do~!
Unfortunately partially due to a lack of resources and transportation I am yet to review the Street Food Saturdays experience for myself..

Still I began researching the idea of Street Food internationally. As I myself enjoy so much travelling and tasting new cuisines, in fact that is partially the inspiration behind this blog, and my passion for writing and travelling in general. That was borne out of a passion, and secondary ambition to be a Food/Travel writer. Separate and apart from my main stream interests in Media, Arts and Entertainment, writing for Literature, Business, and Artistes/Arts clients etc.

As I started to research and look into the already published articles about this online, I realized that Street food, really is great! And the food found on street corners, served by roadside vendors really is some of the best that the world has to offer!

Here are some images and a list of some of the global "foodie" favourites!

1) Baozi Buns or Chinese Steamed Meat Buns

This Chinese special is a steamed doughy bun or bread-like dumpling filled with the meat of choice usually Pork or Chicken meat, but there are other varieties.

2) Kebab

The most famous and favourite street food, on late nights in London is Kebabs, and choosing which to have is often the hardest part. As there are so many to choose from and a variety of Kebabs are available in the City of London, Including the traditional Greek Shish and Doner, Turkish as well as Lebanese Shawarma.

3) Banhmi

This Vietnamese "Street Food" special is basically a oriental flavored, spicy filled sandwich or small loaf of bread. Although Vietnamese food is not as easily accessible as other Oriental foods such as Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Malaysian. The Banhmi has managed to cross over into the mainstream and has become a global Street food favorite.

4) Pizza

This maybe really one of the top Global favorite Street Foods and is the Italian classic for Street food, and "Poor" Gourmet food at its best. Most sought after especially in the thinnest crust varieties that are typically made in the Milanese or Neapolitan style. Whilst some prefer the thicker crust Roman style pizzas or other varieties including Calzone, which funnily in Jamaica is referred to locally as a Pizza Patty!...

5) Hot Dog

These have been synonymous with the streets of New York, other cities in the US and European cities for decades, and there are so many varieties to chose from. Especially in Europe where they sell a variety of sausages, smoked, fried and steamed in many sizes to chose from, with different breads and toppings, sauces etc

6) Fish 'n' Chips

The traditional English Fish and Chips fried fare, that is available on almost every high street, village or town centre across England. Is especially enjoyed on traditional weekend take out nights and even more special on a day out to the famous British Seaside, whether Brighton, Margate, Hastings, Southend or even Blackpool. This is a traditional part of the day out to the sea along with our famous classic Rock, candy that is only available at the seaside it seems.

7) Burger

The Burger whether "Hamburger" classic or "Beef Burger" modern varieties of burger are hard to define in a short posting as there are so many available in many varieties. From the plain classic simple type to a variety of Gourmet Burger specials that are available in a range of places, from Cafés, to Pubs to Sports bars.

8) Tacos

Tacos are the most popular Mexican street food that is available globally to enjoy along with a recent rise in the popularity of Burritos another Tortilla based Mexican favourite. These can be enjoyed in either crispy or soft flour tortilla varieties and with a variety of fillings, made commercially available across the states by the brand Taco Bell.

9) Jerk (Chicken)

Our very own classic Street food here in Jamaica "Jerk" Chicken, has now become world famous, as the seasoning is sold commercially and the sauce is used to create similar versions across the world. Of course the original Jerk Chicken, or "Pan Chicken" as it is sometimes referred to here can only truly be experienced by using a drum pan to create an oven. It is available on almost every Main Street across the island of Jamaica, starting at about Sunset and right until morning in the busiest of places. The most famous being the home of Jerk in Boston Bay, Portland.

10) Sate

Another of my personal favorite barbeque gourmet delicacies that is available traditionally as street food in the East Indies, particularly in Indonesia and Malaysia is Sate. Which consists of cubed meat or fish/shrimp skewered onto bamboo sticks and barbequed to perfection over wood coals. Street vendors across this region can be found selling this local specialty on the street form small wooden carts with coal fires at the rear! It is most delicious when served with the traditional Peanut Sauce, Coconut rice cubes and cucumber with onion.

There are so many popular street foods, that are eaten all over the world. Especially on a Friday night, which is traditionally, a habitual night for a take out. As most people who work regular hours, celebrate the end of a long week with a tasty ready made meal or fast food ,a quick, easy and tasty solution for tired, hungry people.

Have you heard of Bubble tea, a Taiwanese Street food specialty?
